Yes. If an item has one answer box, every incorrect answer receives zero points, and a blank also receives zero, submit your best answer before time ends. A random guess may earn a point; an eliminated choice gives you a better-informed chance. The important qualification is that guessing comes after a quick, disciplined attempt, not instead of reading the question. Check the test's own scoring rules first, because some assessments deduct points for wrong answers or handle unanswered items differently. On a reasoning test, a guessed response is evidence about one scored item, not proof of an intelligence level or a stable personal trait.
The decision in one sentence
When there is genuinely no penalty for an incorrect answer, answer the question. A blank cannot help your score under correct-answer-only scoring, while a selected option has at least some chance of being correct. This is the practical rule used in several large assessments. The current ACT guidance says scores are based on the number correct and advises examinees to answer every question when there is no guessing penalty. The College Board's technical manual describes the same principle as scoring based only on correct answers.
That does not mean choosing quickly is always best. First read the prompt, identify what operation it asks for, and remove options that contradict the information. Then choose the best remaining answer. If the clock is nearly finished, mark an option and move on. Your goal is to collect the information your work has earned without donating time to one stubborn item.
Check the scoring rule before you use the rule
The phrase “no penalty” has a precise meaning: an incorrect response costs no points beyond failing to earn the point for a correct response. It does not mean the test ignores wrong answers, gives partial credit, or guarantees that a guess will improve an already correct answer. Look for the actual instructions about wrong, blank, multiple, and changed responses.
A browser reasoning quiz may use one point per correct item, but you should read its instructions rather than import a rule from the ACT or SAT. A classroom test can use negative marking. A question may require one choice, several choices, or a typed response. If a test deducts points, the best action depends on the deduction and on how much evidence you have for an option. Why a guess can add value
Suppose four options are equally plausible and you have no useful clue. A random selection has a one-in-four chance of being correct. That is not a prediction that you will get the item right; it is the chance attached to one selection under the stated assumption. If you leave the item blank under correct-answer-only scoring, the chance of earning that point is zero.
The comparison changes when you eliminate choices. If one option clearly violates the prompt, three options remain and your chance under an equal-remaining-choice assumption becomes one in three. If two options are ruled out, it becomes one in two. These fractions describe the decision structure, not your actual ability on the item. They also assume that the remaining options are not designed with a hidden clue you have missed.
OpenStax's introductory statistics text defines independent events as outcomes where knowing one event does not change the chance of the other. That idea helps explain why one blind guess does not make the next answer more or less likely. It does not justify hunting for answer-letter patterns. Each item should be judged from its own prompt and options.
A worked example of informed guessing
Consider an original, non-test example. A sequence begins 4, 7, 10, 13, and the next value is offered as 15, 16, 17, or 18. The visible operation is adding three each time, so 16 is the best answer. You are not guessing in the ordinary sense because the displayed relationships support one option.
Now change the sequence to 4, 7, 10, 13, followed by the same four options, but imagine you have only noticed that the values rise. You have some information, but not enough to establish the increment. You might still select 16 because it fits the most obvious continuation, but label the response mentally as tentative. The distinction matters during review: “wrong operation” is more useful feedback than “bad luck.”
Use elimination without inventing clues
Elimination is useful when it comes from the question. In a quantitative item, reject an option with the wrong sign or unit. In a verbal item, reject a choice that does not answer the exact question. In a spatial item, reject a shape that cannot result from the stated fold or rotation. In a logical item, test an option against the condition that must always hold. These are small checks, but they turn a blind selection into an evidence-based one.
Do not treat the position of an option, its length, or a run of identical letters as evidence. Test writers may balance answer positions across a form, but an individual item does not become more likely to have a particular letter because the previous answer used it. Avoid changing a supported answer merely to make the answer pattern look varied.
Guessing and time are linked
The main cost is often not the guessed answer. It is the time spent trying to turn an uncertain item into a certain one. A sound sequence is: read, identify the task, make a short attempt, eliminate what you can, choose an answer, and continue. Mark the item for review only if the test allows you to return and you have enough time to do so.
The ACT's examinee guidance pairs answering every question with answering easier questions first, returning to difficult ones, and reviewing work if time remains. That is a useful general pattern, but navigation rules vary. Some timed tests lock a section after time expires, and some browser quizzes advance immediately. Learn the interface before the clock matters.
When changing an answer makes sense
A late change is justified by new evidence: you reread a condition, notice a unit mismatch, find a missed relationship, or realize that you answered a different question. It is not justified merely because the first option feels too easy or because you have been staring at it for a long time.
Separate confidence from correctness. A confident answer can still contain a reading error, and a hesitant answer can be right. If you review, ask what specific observation supports the change. If you cannot name one, keeping the original answer may be more disciplined than reacting to discomfort. This is a reasoning habit, not a promise that first answers are generally superior.
What a guessed response means for your score
A guessed response contributes to the raw score in the same mechanical way as any other response: it is either marked correct or it is not. A raw score is the count of correct answers before any conversion or comparison. It does not reveal which answers came from a worked solution, a partial elimination, or a last-second selection unless the test records that process separately.
That matters for interpretation. A raw score from one fixed set of reasoning questions is not automatically an IQ score, percentile, diagnosis, or estimate of fixed potential. A normed interpretation requires a specified instrument, comparison group, administration conditions, and evidence supporting the intended use. The Standards for Educational and Psychological Testing emphasize that meaning belongs to a proposed interpretation and use, not simply to a test label.
Review guesses as learning data
After the test, review uncertain items with the worked answer or explanation when one is provided. Classify the result narrowly: solved correctly, solved incorrectly, eliminated to two, chose without evidence, misread the prompt, or ran out of time. Each category suggests a different next action. Misreading calls for slower wording checks. Weak elimination calls for comparing options against constraints. A time problem calls for pacing practice. An unfamiliar operation calls for a fresh example.
Do not count every correct guess as proof that the underlying operation is mastered. Familiarity with the format can improve performance on similar questions, which is useful for practice, but it is not the same as demonstrating broad gains in general intelligence. Review should make your next attempt more informed, not turn one outcome into an identity claim.

Before starting, confirm whether wrong answers lose points and whether blanks are treated differently. During the test, answer straightforward items first if navigation permits. On a difficult question, spend enough time to identify the task and remove defensible contradictions. If no time remains, select the best remaining option when there is no penalty.
