The Stanford–Binet Intelligence Scales, Fifth Edition, or SB5, measures cognitive ability through five broad factors: fluid reasoning, knowledge, quantitative reasoning, visual-spatial processing, and working memory. Each factor is assessed through verbal and nonverbal tasks, producing ten subtests in the full battery. A professionally administered SB5 can produce verbal, nonverbal, abbreviated, factor, and Full Scale IQ scores that are interpreted against age-based norms. That makes it different from a short online quiz, where a number of correct answers is a raw performance result rather than a normed IQ score. The SB5 can inform an assessment question when administered and interpreted by a qualified professional. It cannot, by itself, turn a score into a person’s identity, worth, diagnosis, or fixed potential.
Start with the decision, not the label
If you are deciding whether a Stanford–Binet result answers a serious question, first ask what decision the result is meant to support. Curiosity about reasoning needs a different level of evidence from a psychoeducational evaluation, a clinical assessment, or a decision about support at school. The SB5 is designed for the latter kinds of professional assessment questions, not as a self-issued badge.
The word measure is important here. A test does not directly reveal an invisible quantity in the way a ruler reads a length. It samples performance on defined tasks, converts those responses through a scoring system, and supports interpretations when the evidence, norms, administration, and intended use fit together. The same person can perform differently when language, fatigue, hearing, vision, familiarity, anxiety, or the testing setting changes.
What the SB5 is built to assess
The current SB5 is an individually administered, norm-referenced measure of intelligence and cognitive abilities for examinees from age 2 through 85 and older. Norm-referenced means that a score is interpreted by comparison with the performance of a specified reference group, usually people of a similar age. The publisher describes a typical administration as about five minutes per subtest, while a reference entry describes roughly 45 to 75 minutes for the complete battery. The exact time depends on what is administered and on the examinee.
The full battery contains ten subtests. They are arranged as one verbal and one nonverbal subtest for each of five cognitive factors. This balanced structure lets an examiner examine broad performance as well as differences between responding with language and responding with less language. It is still a language-involving assessment overall: nonverbal directions and the testing relationship do not make every influence disappear.
The five factors in plain language
Fluid reasoning concerns solving a new problem by noticing relationships and drawing an inference. Knowledge concerns information and verbal learning accumulated through experience and education. Quantitative reasoning concerns numerical concepts and relationships, not merely speed at doing familiar arithmetic. Visual-spatial processing concerns analyzing and mentally working with visual forms. Working memory concerns holding information briefly while using, rearranging, or updating it.
These are useful descriptions of task demands, not five sealed compartments in a person. Cognitive abilities overlap. A quantitative problem can also require working memory and language comprehension. A visual task can require attention and a strategy. The factor names tell you what a set of tasks is intended to sample; they do not prove that a single score isolates one pure mental capacity.
Why verbal and nonverbal versions matter
The SB5 includes verbal and nonverbal routes across all five factors. Verbal tasks require understanding spoken or printed language and giving verbal responses. Nonverbal tasks reduce the language required and can use pictorial, figural, or symbolic material. This can make the nonverbal scale useful when language access, hearing, speech, or communication is part of the assessment question, but it is not a universal language-free solution.
A difference between verbal and nonverbal performance is a clue for interpretation, not a verdict about ability. An examiner would consider language history, sensory access, education, cultural experience, motor demands, and behavior during testing. The comparison is only meaningful when the relevant scores were obtained under appropriate conditions and the question calls for that comparison.
What the scores mean, and what they do not
A raw score is the number of points earned on a defined set of tasks. It is not automatically an IQ. In the SB5 scoring system, subtest results are converted to scaled scores, and verbal, nonverbal, and Full Scale IQ results are standard scores. A standard score is a transformed result interpreted relative to a norm group. The SB5 scoring guide lists a mean of 10 and standard deviation of 3 for subtest scaled scores, and a mean of 100 and standard deviation of 15 for its IQ scales.
A percentile rank answers a different question: the percentage of the reference group whose observed result was at or below a particular score, subject to the test’s rules and rounding. A confidence interval expresses uncertainty around an obtained score. These values cannot be reconstructed responsibly from an online quiz’s item count. Nor should an SB5 result be read as a diagnosis without the broader evaluation and professional judgment that the decision requires.
A worked reasoning example without copying test content
Consider an example created for teaching, not taken from the SB5. Imagine four rows of blank tiles. In each row, a small mark moves one place to the right, then the row repeats the same movement. The task is not to guess the prettiest continuation. First describe the positions in each row, then test whether the proposed rule predicts every completed row. If it predicts only the last transition, it is weak. If one rule predicts all of them and does not add an unnecessary exception, it is the better explanation.
That operation illustrates one part of fluid reasoning: identifying a relation in unfamiliar material and checking it against the available evidence. It does not measure every factor in the SB5, and success on a similar puzzle later could reflect familiarity with that operation. Improvement on a practiced format is near transfer. It is not, by itself, evidence that general intelligence has increased.

Read the report in layers. Start with the referral question and the conditions of administration. Then identify whether a displayed number is raw, scaled, standard, composite, factor-level, or percentile information. Check the age or norm group used, the confidence interval, and whether the examiner discusses meaningful differences between scores. A profile with uneven results may call for more careful interpretation than one summary number suggests, but an uneven profile is not automatically a disorder or a hidden talent.
Next ask what evidence supports the proposed use. The testing standards treat validity as support for interpretations and decisions, not as a permanent property attached to a test name. A report should therefore connect its inference to this examinee, this administration, this population, and this decision. If the question is consequential, ask the qualified examiner what additional history, observation, achievement data, or other assessment evidence is needed.
When an SB5 result is the right next step
A professional assessment is worth discussing when the result will inform a consequential educational, clinical, disability, or support decision. The right professional and instrument depend on the referral question, age, communication needs, setting, and local practice. A browser quiz should not replace that process, and an SB5 score should not be treated as the sole piece of evidence for a complex decision.
For low-stakes curiosity, you may need no normed instrument at all.
